Its exposed lead tip and surrounding jacket define a projectile intended to deform under suitable impact conditions.

The additional bullet weight sets this load apart from Magtech’s 500B and 500L cartridges, even though all are classified as semi-jacketed soft points. Magtech lists 1,624 fps for this ammunition. That factory number and 400-grain projectile describe a particular hunting configuration, but they do not support unverified claims about accuracy or penetration.

For a revolver previously sighted with 325-grain bullets, changing to this 400-grain load calls for a direct point-of-impact comparison. A 20-round box of 500A ammo provides the precise heavy soft-point configuration for that assessment. The defining difference is the weight-and-velocity pairing, not a generic statement about the caliber’s power.

Magtech Key Features

400-Grain Hunting Weight: This bullet is 75 grains heavier than Magtech’s 325-grain 500B and 500L projectiles.

Semi-Jacketed Soft Point: A partial jacket leaves the lead nose exposed for deformation under suitable impact conditions.

Factory Muzzle Rating: Magtech specifies 1,624 fps for product 500A.

https://www.sportingsupplygroup.com/products/magtech-500-s-and-w-magnum-400-grain-semi-jacketed-soft-point-sjsp-flat-500a-20-rounds
