The XTP uses a jacketed nose and controlled-expansion design rather than the exposed lead of many traditional 38 Special revolver loads.

Hornady forms the XTP jacket with deliberate thickness variation and cuts precise serrations around the nose to influence how it opens. For this 38 Special configuration, Hornady rates this ammunition at 800 fps. A 158-grain bullet is familiar to many revolver owners, but similar weights do not make an XTP and a cast lead projectile equivalent in either construction or point of impact.

The distinctive value of the Custom load is the engineered XTP bullet at a traditional weight, not an unsupported promise about recovered expansion from every barrel. Twenty-five cartridges per box provide this ammo for comparing a defensive JHP against standard 158-grain practice loads in the same revolver. Sight setting, barrel length and bullet geometry can all influence what appears on a target.

Hornady Custom Key Features

158-Grain XTP: Hornady's jacketed hollow point uses a traditional 38 Special bullet weight.

Scored Jacket Nose: Precisely placed serrations are intended to guide expansion of the XTP bullet.

Muzzle Rating: Hornady lists 800 fps for Custom 90362.

https://www.sportingsupplygroup.com/products/hornady-custom-38-special-158-grain-xtp-jacketed-hollow-point-jhp-90362-25-rounds
