That is lighter than familiar 230-grain hardball and introduces a cavity-filling flexible tip intended for defensive use instead of the round nose of ordinary practice rounds.

The FTX's elastomer element occupies the bullet nose, a design intended to limit clothing interference during expansion. Hornady lists 900 fps for this ammunition. Even when an owner regularly practices with 185-grain target bullets, the FTX's different nose geometry merits its own evaluation; a shared nominal weight does not establish identical feeding or sight regulation.

The weight difference from 230-grain FMJ may also influence where a given pistol prints. A practical choice should account for feeding, point of impact and the exact 45 ACP chambering rather than relying on familiar hardball performance to predict this defensive cartridge's behavior. Twenty rounds of this ammo give 45 ACP owners the specific flexible-tip projectile for function checks with carry magazines.

Hornady Critical Defense Key Features

185-Grain FTX: A lighter-than-hardball 45 ACP hollow point uses Hornady's flexible tip.

Nose Cavity Insert: The elastomer tip is intended to reduce fabric clogging during impact.

Muzzle Velocity: Hornady lists 900 fps for 90900.

https://www.sportingsupplygroup.com/products/hornady-critical-defense-45-acp-185-grain-ftx-hollow-point-hp-90900-20-rounds
