This differs from the heavyweight lead bullets commonly associated with the caliber and from the separate high-pressure 44 Magnum chambering.

The FTX's flexible nose insert is intended to reduce clothing-related clogging of the cavity before the bullet begins to deform. Hornady publishes 900 fps for this ammunition. Because revolvers firing 44 Special vary widely in barrel length and sight regulation, the relationship between the 165-grain bullet and the user's usual practice load is best determined through direct comparison.

Owners should not mistake the cartridge for 44 Magnum, even if both rounds can appear in discussions of similar revolvers. The lighter flexible-tip bullet gives shooters a distinctive defensive configuration, but actual point of impact and firearm suitability still matter more than general statements about the two 44-caliber rounds. A 20-round package provides this 44 Special ammo for evaluation in the correct chambering.

Hornady Critical Defense Key Features

165-Grain FTX: The bullet uses a light-for-caliber 44 Special weight with an elastomer nose insert.

44 Special Cartridge: The chambering is distinct from the higher-pressure 44 Magnum cartridge.

Listed Velocity: Hornady rates 90700 at 900 fps.

https://www.sportingsupplygroup.com/products/hornady-critical-defense-44-special-165-grain-ftx-hollow-point-hp-90700-20-rounds
