Hornady American Gunner 45 ACP 185 grain jacketed hollow point 90904 ammo uses a 185-grain XTP, offering a lighter defensive projectile than the familiar 230-grain 45 ACP hardball weight. Its protected hollow-point cavity and scored jacket are designed for controlled opening rather than routine non-expanding target use.
The engineering difference is not simply a 45-grain reduction in bullet mass. Hornady draws the XTP jacket with changing thickness and forms serrations at the nose to guide deformation. This ammunition has a factory rating of 970 fps, but that velocity does not determine how the chosen pistol will feed or group the lighter projectile.
Someone whose sights are regulated for 230-grain practice loads should check where the 185-grain XTP lands, especially before selecting it for carry. The two weights may share a chambering, but they represent different combinations of projectile shape and external ballistics. A 20-round box gives 45 ACP owners the specific ammo for comparison with their customary FMJ training load.
