Hornady Subsonic 45 ACP 230 grain jacketed hollow point 90971 ammo uses a traditional-weight XTP defensive bullet with a factory velocity deliberately below the speed of sound under ordinary conditions. Its 230-grain configuration is familiar to 45 ACP shooters, but the Subsonic product line is designed with sound-conscious applications in mind.
Hornady’s XTP bullet uses a drawn jacket and serrated cavity rather than a specially segmented design. The ammunition is rated at 925 fps; actual sound behavior also depends on local conditions and the firearm. A suppressor does not eliminate all noise, and published subsonic velocity alone does not guarantee identical operation in every pistol.
For a suppressed or unsuppressed 45 ACP pistol, the useful comparison is how this exact load cycles and where its XTP bullet strikes. The 20-round box supplies ammo for that evaluation. Its design combines a specific 230-grain JHP with a subsonic velocity objective instead of treating every standard 45 ACP cartridge as equivalent.
