Federal Personal Defense Hydra-Shok 45 ACP 230 grain jacketed hollow point P45HS1 ammo uses the classic 230-grain 45 ACP bullet weight with Federal's original center-post Hydra-Shok jacketed hollow point. Its cavity differs visibly from ordinary round-nose ball cartridges and from the later, revised Hydra-Shok Deep design.

Hydra-Shok's internal post is intended to help control how the bullet's hollow nose opens. In 45 ACP, the familiar 230-grain mass does not mean every projectile behaves the same way on impact, especially across FMJ, cast lead, and JHP construction. This ammo has a published muzzle velocity of 900 fps.

Familiarity with ordinary 230-grain 45 ACP hardball does not establish how the original Hydra-Shok center-post hollow point will feed or strike through the same handgun. Comparing this ammunition with the usual practice cartridge can reveal those differences without confusing the original Hydra-Shok design with its later Deep revision. Federal supplies 20 nickel-cased rounds of the original defensive load.
